Myrcene
Myrcene, also known as beta-myrcene, is an earthy-smelling monoterpene, and in fact, the most common monoterpene found in cannabis. Myrcene is commonly extracted from mango, thyme, lemongrass, and hops. Beyond cannabis, myrcene is found in hops and is responsible for the peppery, spicy, balsam fragrance in beer.
Myrcene is known for its sedative and muscle relaxant effects. The terpene enhances the effects of GABA (Gamma-amino butyric acid) at the GABA-A receptor, which is the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. GABA limits nerve transmission, which prevents nervous activity and can greatly reduce anxiety. This terpene also creates the typical ‘couch-lock’ sedative feeling upon ingestion, making it a great ingredient in a late dinner or midnight snack on restless nights. Typically, strains with high myrcene levels tend to be indica.
Strains with high amounts of indica are:
- OG Kush
- Blue Dream
- Remedy
- 9-LB Hammer
- Grape Ape
- Granddaddy Purple
- Tangie
- Harlequin
